Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
North End Access
One of the few public access points on the northwest shore near the north end of Torch Lake. Adjacent to William Good Day Park — 3 acres with 75 feet of shoreline, a small buoyed swim area, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, grills, and two covered pavilions. A good option if you're bringing non-boating family members along. Rocky shoreline is popular with Petoskey stone hunters.
Fees & Permits
Township-operated, not a DNR site — no Recreation Passport accepted. Non-residents pay $20 per launch (motorized) or $5 per non-motorized watercraft. Torch Lake Township property owners launch free with a permit (available at the township office or website). Fee has increased over the years — was $10 as recently as 2021. Paid launch ticket must be visibly displayed in your vehicle or you risk a citation or tow.
Paddlecraft
Kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and jet skis are explicitly allowed per the township ordinance (PP Ordinance #2023-2). Non-residents pay $5 per non-motorized craft. The township website may still say paddlecraft are prohibited — the ordinance supersedes that. Shoreline is rocky for the first several feet — water shoes help. If you'd rather not pay, Forest Home Township Park (free, carry-down, northeast shore) and Eastport (Rec Passport, beach launch option) are nearby alternatives.
Parking & Crowding
Trailer parking is separate from the day park lot and a noticeable walk from the ramp. The 52-space day park lot is free. Both areas fill quickly on summer weekends — arrive early. Limited space for larger rigs.
Boat Size Limits
Township ordinance sets hard limits: 26 ft max boat length, 48 ft combined length (vehicle + trailer + boat), 6,500 lbs max (boat + trailer), and 2 axles or less. Power loading and unloading is prohibited — $100+ fine. No exceptions for non-residents. Township property owners can get a $100 seasonal permit for oversized boats. If you're running anything bigger, head to Torch River Bridge or Torch River DNR Access at the south end where you'll get two lanes and more room.
