Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Tiny Launch, Big Scenery
One lane and five trailer spots — this is not where you go for a quick tournament launch. It's a small ramp tucked inside a historic state park, best suited for kayaks, small fishing boats, and folks who aren't in a rush. If you're trailering anything over 18 feet, you'll want to look elsewhere.
Snug Harbor Conditions
The ramp sits inside the protected Snag Bay, so you're shielded from open Lake Michigan swells. That's the upside. The downside is the harbor is shallow and silts in — check your depth before powering out, especially later in summer. Rocky bottom near shore can scrape a prop if you're not careful.
Parking Fills Fast
Five trailer spots disappear almost immediately on summer weekends, and the main parking lot serves the historic townsite too, so it's competing with tourists, hikers, and kayak renters. Get there before 9 AM or you'll be circling. Midweek is a completely different experience — practically empty.
State Park Pass Required
You need a Michigan Recreation Passport to get through the gate. They'll check at the booth on the way in. If you don't have one on your plate, you can buy one there, but expect a couple extra minutes in line during peak season when the tourist traffic backs up.
Worth It For Kayakers
Honestly, this launch shines for paddle craft. The limestone cliffs along the bay are stunning from the water, and the protected harbor makes for easy paddling even on breezy days. Power boaters with real rigs should head to Fairport or Nahma instead — more lanes, more parking, less hassle.
