Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Not Really A Launch
Don't come here expecting a proper boat ramp. There's no real launch infrastructure — this is a remote campground with beach access. You might drag a kayak or small canoe to the water, but trailering anything in is impractical. The 7-10 miles of narrow, single-lane dirt road with tight overhead branches will punish anything bigger than a midsize SUV.
The Road In
Budget 20-30 minutes just for the dirt road portion. It's a long, winding forest road — tight enough that a 34-foot trailer won't fit through the overhanging branches. Fine for cars, trucks, and vans, but side clearance is minimal in spots. Don't count on cell service once you're back here.
Rocky Bottom Surprise
The bay itself is rocky bottom in many areas, roughly 5 feet deep close to shore during high water years. There are sandy stretches too, but water shoes are a must if you're wading out to launch a paddle craft. The southern end of the campground near site 22 has the most direct water access.
Trailer Parking Reality
Three trailer spots listed, but this place isn't set up for motorboat launching in any meaningful way. Those spots serve the campground more than any ramp. If you're looking to get on Lake Michigan with a powerboat in this area, head to Fayette Historic State Park instead — it's the administering park and has actual facilities.
Peak Season Timing
First-come, first-served only — no reservations. Midweek you'll have your pick of 23 sites even in summer. Friday nights in August can fill up by evening. Memorial Day and early June are practically empty. This is one of those spots where the remoteness keeps the crowds away, which is the whole point.
