Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Long Dirt Road In
It's about 8 miles of dirt and gravel road from US-2 to reach the point. Totally doable in a regular vehicle, but take it easy — washboard sections can rattle your trailer hardware loose if you're flying. Budget an extra 15-20 minutes each way.
Single Lane, Plan Accordingly
One lane and 13 trailer spots means this isn't the place to show up at 8 AM on a Saturday in July expecting a quick drop. Weekday mornings are your best bet. If the lot's full, there's really nowhere to overflow — you're at the tip of a peninsula with limited shoulder space.
Lighthouse Crowd Overlap
This is primarily a lighthouse tourist destination, so during summer the grounds get busy with sightseers, families, and gift shop visitors. The boat launch parking shares space with that foot traffic. Off-season you'll practically have the place to yourself.
Exposed to Big Lake Weather
The point juts right out into northern Lake Michigan with almost no protection. When the wind picks up from the west or northwest, the waves stack up fast and that single-lane ramp gets dicey. I've seen days where kiteboarders are having the time of their lives while boaters are white-knuckling it back to the trailer. Check wind direction before committing to the drive out.
Worth It for the Setting
Honestly, this launch is more useful as a calm-day access point than a reliable workhorse. But the sunrise views are absolutely world-class, the shoreline is wild and rocky, and you're accessing a stretch of Lake Michigan that most people never see. If conditions cooperate, it's a special spot to get on the water.
