Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Not a Real Ramp
There's no actual boat ramp here — no lanes, no trailer parking, nothing paved. You can drag a canoe or kayak down to the water, but forget about trailering anything in.
Seasonal Road Closure
The access road gets gated off from late winter into spring, so don't count on getting back here until things dry out. Timing varies year to year, but plan on being locked out through mud season.
Don't Expect Much Fishing
Hewes Lake is more of a shallow, swampy lake than a real fishery. It's part of the Dansville State Game Area and the draw is wildlife and hiking, not bass and panfish. Bring binoculars instead of rods.
Bugs Are Brutal
Summers back here are a mosquito factory — the surrounding swamp sees to that. If you're paddling in warm months, douse yourself in repellent or you'll be miserable within minutes.
