Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
No Real Ramp
There are zero lanes and no trailer parking here — this is a carry-in only situation. You're sliding a canoe or kayak down the bank near the bridge. Forget anything bigger than a small johnboat, and even that's a chore.
River Goes Shallow Fast
After spring runoff, the Huron drops significantly through here. By mid-summer you're practically walking the river — great for wading and swimming holes, but not for floating any kind of boat with a motor. Plan your paddling trips for April through early June.
Remote Gravel Road Access
Getting here means committing to a long stretch of gravel road, and it doubles as an active logging route. You'll share it with loaded timber trucks during the day. It's passable but slow — don't expect to tow anything wide without pulling over occasionally.
Mosquitoes Are Legendary
Bring every bit of bug protection you own. The river corridor and surrounding forest create a mosquito factory from late May through August. If you're rigging up streamside at dusk, you'll donate a pint of blood.
Pack Everything In and Out
There are no trash cans, no water hookups, no dump station on-site. Vault toilets across the road are it. If you need water or a dump station, that's a drive to Baraga State Park. Factor that into your trip planning — this is true backcountry camping with a fishing spot attached.
