Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Route Matters Big
Google Maps will try to send you down some brutal two-track routes that really do need 4WD. Stick to the county roads and you can make it in a 2WD truck or even a car — just know which route you're following before you lose cell signal, because you will lose it.
Tiny Window For Trailers
Eight trailer spots and one lane at a remote river mouth means you're not fighting crowds most days, but on a summer weekend those spots can fill by mid-morning with campers who aren't moving until Sunday. If the lot's full, you're out of luck — there's no real overflow area out here.
River Mouth Conditions
The ramp sits near where the Two Hearted dumps into Superior, so sandbars shift seasonally and water depth at the mouth can change dramatically. Early spring runoff gives you the most water; by late summer it can get shallow enough to scrape a prop if you're not careful threading out to the big lake.
Worth The Journey
This is one of the most remote public launches in the eastern U.P. — that's the whole appeal. The Lake Superior beach on both sides of the river mouth is unreal for agates and Yooperlites. If you're just launching a small boat or kayak for river fishing, it's hard to beat the solitude. Don't expect amenities beyond the campground basics.
Winter Access Exists
Snowmobilers use this area in winter, so the trail network stays somewhat groomed, but don't expect the road to be plowed for a truck and trailer. It's really a three-season launch unless you're dragging a small sled in on a snowmobile.
