Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Left Turn Headache
If you're coming northbound on Orchard Lake Road, there's no left turn into the lot. You'll have to drive past and make a U-turn in heavier traffic, which feels sketchy. Southbound approach is the way to go if you can plan your route that way.
Lot Closes at Capacity
On nice summer weekends, the parking lot fills by noon and they shut the gate — that's it, you're done. Get there by 9 AM or earlier on Saturdays. If you're trailering, every spot is reserved for trailer rigs only. Non-trailer vehicles can park at the museum up the road or nearby businesses and walk over.
No Lights After Dark
The launch is technically open until 11 PM, but there's zero lighting at the dock or parking area. Loading your boat in pitch black is a real adventure — bring headlamps and have someone spotting you if you're pulling out after sunset.
Bathrooms Are a Gamble
The restrooms exist, but they're locked more often than they're open. Don't count on them being available even during peak hours. Plan accordingly before you arrive.
Shallow Spots and Deep Drops
Orchard Lake hits 108 feet at its deepest, but there are random shallow areas that'll surprise you — especially near the sandbar along the north shore. On busy days, novice boaters pulling tubes in unpredictable figure-eight patterns add to the chaos, so keep your head on a swivel out there.
