Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
State Park Pass Required
You need a Recreation Passport or day pass to get in — no sneaking by the gate. Worth it though, because the ramp is well-maintained and you're launching into one of the clearest lakes in the state.
Summer Weekends Fill Fast
Those 45 trailer spots in the upper day-use loop sound generous until the Fourth of July weekend hits. By 9 AM on peak Saturdays, you're circling. Get there early or plan a weekday trip — midweek you'll practically have the ramp to yourself.
AIS Stations Slow You Down
There are two aquatic invasive species inspection stations plus a boat wash on park grounds. Budget an extra 10-15 minutes on the way in and out. They're serious about keeping Higgins clean, and honestly, given how pristine this lake is, nobody complains.
Deep Water Off The Ramp
Three lanes with good depth right off the concrete — you're not dragging your hull across sand or muck like at some of the smaller access points around the lake. Big boats, pontoons, whatever — you won't have issues getting off the trailer here.
Parking Loop Is A Hike
The trailer parking is up in the day-use loop, not right at the water. After you launch, you're walking a bit to get back to your rig. Not a dealbreaker, but if you're solo-launching, think through your plan for getting back to the dock quickly.
