Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Paddle & Electric Only
No gas motors allowed on Marl Lake. Kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and small boats with electric trolling motors only. The lake is only about 4 feet deep throughout with a loose marl bottom — even with an electric motor you may drag. Canoes and kayaks can get stuck if you beach in the middle. Stick to the edges.
Cut River Paddle Route
The Cut River connects Marl Lake to Higgins Lake upstream — this is a real, navigable paddle route for kayaks and canoes. The stretch between the two lakes is popular for fishing and exploring. Water levels have dropped over the years and the river can be very shallow in mid-summer, but it's still passable most of the season.
Hidden Gem
Crystal clear water, wildlife everywhere — loons, swans, eagles, beaver. One reviewer admitted she didn't want to write a review because she didn't want it to get too popular. Rarely crowded even in peak summer. The 5.5 miles of wooded trails around the lake add hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing to the visit.
Controversial History
Long-time locals argue the DNR boat launch degraded what was once a pristine non-motorized smallmouth bass lake. Motors kicked up the marl bottom, heated the water, and covered fish beds. The smallmouth population declined and was replaced by largemouth. The lake is still fishable but not what it once was.
