Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly is Miners Beach Falls and how do I get there?
The falls are at the east end of Miners Beach. At the end of Miners Beach Road, turn right (not left to the main beach) to reach the eastern parking area. From there it's just a short walk to the falls. Many visitors accidentally park at the main beach lot and have to walk a full mile.
How far is the walk to Miners Beach Falls?
From the eastern parking lot, it's only about a 5-minute walk. If you park at the main Miners Beach lot, it's about a 1-mile walk either along the soft sand beach or the North Country Trail above the beach.
Can you swim at Miners Beach Falls?
Yes, this is a popular swimming spot. The sandstone shelf where the falls enter Lake Superior creates natural pools and a gradual entry into the water. The waterfall runoff can actually make the water feel warmer than the lake itself.
Is Miners Beach Falls worth visiting?
If you're already visiting Miners Beach, Miners Castle, or Miners Falls, it's worth the short detour. The falls themselves are small, but the combination of waterfall, beach, rock formations, and Pictured Rocks views makes it a beautiful spot. Don't make a special trip just for the falls though.
Why can't I find Miners Beach Falls?
The falls aren't marked on park maps or signed from the parking area. They're at the far eastern end of Miners Beach where Elliot Creek enters Lake Superior. Look for where the beach transitions to rock formations. The falls are also called Elliot Falls by some.
When is the best time to visit Miners Beach Falls?
Visit in late spring or early summer for the best water flow. By late July and August, the falls often dry to just a trickle. Also avoid peak summer if possible due to crowds and aggressive black flies.
How bad are the bugs at Miners Beach Falls?
Black flies can be miserable here, especially June through August. They're particularly aggressive near the beach. Bring strong bug spray and consider visiting in May or September to avoid the worst of them.
Do you need a Recreation Passport for Miners Beach Falls?
No, there's no fee to visit Miners Beach or the falls. Free parking is available at both the main beach lot and the eastern lot.
Is there cell phone service at Miners Beach Falls?
No, you'll lose cell service in this area. Download maps beforehand and don't rely on GPS once you're close.
